Second Assistant

Piedmont Driving Club
Atlanta, GA
Required Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in the maintenance, operation or management of a golf course and related facilities and equipment
  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate college study in agronomy or turfgrass maintenance
  • Supervisory Experience

Job Summary (Essential Functions)

Assists with the supervision of daily course maintenance and inspections of course conditions.

Job Knowledge, Core Competencies and Expectations

  • Knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in grounds and golf course construction, landscaped area maintenance work and building maintenance and improvement
  • Operate trucks and lightly motorized equipment
  • Knowledge of agronomy, turfgrass science and the rules of golf
  • Working knowledge of basic electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers and various types of pumps and pumping systems
  • Knowledge of and the ability to perform required role in emergency situations

Job Tasks/Duties

  • Helps oversee and perform ongoing course maintenance activities
  • Completes minor repair on equipment
  • Operates and maintain equipment
  • Maintains equipment inventory
  • Performs fertilizer and pesticide applications
  • Completes necessary irrigation repair and audits
  • Trains personnel in ongoing course maintenance activities
  • Assists selection, training, supervision, scheduling and evaluate assigned personnel
  • Maintains parts and supplies inventory
  • Performs safety orientation and ongoing safety training for all departmental staff
  • Supervises Maintenance Shop and runs operations in absence of  Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent
  • Attends staff meetings, as required
  • Performs other tasks and duties, as assigned

Licenses and Special Requirements

  • Pesticide Applicator’s certificate
  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
  • Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling

Course Operation: Savannah Quarters Country Club is currently taking applications to fill the position of second assistant. Savannah Quarters C. C. is a private residential community with a Greg Norman designed golf course and is managed by Troon Golf The candidate will work closely with the Superintendent and first assistant in all phases of maintaining the golf course and club grounds. This individual will assist with fertilizer and pesticide applications, special projects, irrigation repairs and supervision of the golf maintenance staff. Individual must have a 2 or 4 year Turf Management degree or related. Applicant must be able to obtain a Georgia pesticide license within six months of employment. Benefits include Health and Dental insurance, 401K plan, Uniforms, dues paid for GCSAA and Local Associations, and golfing privileges. Course Operation: 18 Hole private facility on the northern end of Sea Island. We have Tifeagle greens, Celebration fairways, 419 roughs, and diamond zoysia and Tifgrand Tees. Course was built in 1995 by Rees Jones, and renovated in 2007 by Rees Jones again.
Duties: To assist the Superintendent in day to day operations including, but not limited to, chemical/fertilizer applications, accurate record keeping of applications, supervision of crew, and job delegations.
Salary: TBD.

Course Operation: Capital City Club Crabapple is a Tom Fazio design located north of Atlanta opening in June 2002. The course features A-1 greens, Tifsport tees, fairways and roughs with extensive native tall grass areas. Crabapple has hosted several prestigious professional and amateur tournaments including the 2003 WGC American Express Championship, 2017 USGA Mid-Am, 2013 NCAA Div. 1 Men's Championship, 2016 GSGA Centennial State Am, 2012 AJGA Rolex TOC and the 2005 AJGA Cannon Cup.
Duties: Chemical and fertilizer applications, irrigation maintenance, crew management, projects and other golf course maintenance tasks.
Salary: $40,000-$43,000 (Hourly).

Course Operation: 18-hole University Course, Robert Trent Jones/Davis Love III design, UGA Golf Team Practice Facilities.
Duties: Responsible for irrigation repair and maintenance.  Responsible for the application of all plant protectants.  Responsible for some crew supervision.
Salary: $15/Hr + Overtime.
